After the 7 day hold, he officially became the first rescue at the sanctuary. Hammy had indentions all around his belly like something had been wrapped around him his whole little life. He was about 6 months old when he came to the sanctuary. He and Bacon had a fence between them for a few months so that they could get to know each other. One day, we had someone working in the yard and he left the gate open! You've heard the saying "live like someone left the gate open"? Well Hammy did. He went out exploring and it wasn't long until Bacon and Hammy became the best of friends. Hammy came to the sanctuary on December 9, 2016.

I had been reading a lot about taking care of pigs but when we got home that day, Bacon and I snuggled up on the bed and I spent a few hours reading more about them. That is when I learned that 4 weeks old was too young for a piglet to be separated from its mommy. I became his new mommy that day. He slept in the bed with me and never even had a accident.  I brought Bacon home on August 27, 2016.

We believe that the rest of his litter mates was accidentally killed by mommy rolling over onto them, which isn't uncommon. Valentine lived in the house for the first few months. I fed him with a syringe around the clock. It's not good to let a baby pig drink from a bottle as they are more prone to aspiration. When he was a little older, I moved him outside to the barn. He had goat roommates and he's also had a piggy roommate but Valentine does not like any roommates except for chickens. Which is uncommon for pigs as they usually like to sleep with and be around other pigs. Valentine also doesn't like to be wet, mud holes, or wallowing. He came home on February 13, 2017, hence his name.

She was probably only about 4-5 months old at the time. She was covered in ticks and her skin looked bad. Charlotte lived in the house for a few years. She's the only pig I've ever had to have Dippity Pig Syndrome. That was definitely a learning curve on my behalf. Charlotte loved rolling in the mud and being outside so she and Ellie Mae transitioned outside full time at the same time so they would have each other. Charlotte is still a big mama's baby any chance she gets.

Hence, the name Chomper! Everytime I went out to feed him, I would have to use a sorting board to keep between me and him. I quickly had him neutered and his personality changed very soon after that. Today, he is a big teddy bear who loves to be loved on.

Phoenix was around 8 months old when she arrived in March 2024. Her previous owners bought her from a pet store and was not sure on what to feed her so she was fed a diet of canned green beans for months. Due to not having the correct nutrition, she was about the size of an 8 week old dragon. Her name fits her well because she was (and sometimes still is) very feisty when it comes to her food.
